Hey Friend!
"Mei Phing, I've been scrolling on TikTok watching motivational videos."
"I feel like they work for one day, but I feel worse tomorrow."
"I still feel lost and confused at work."
...says almost every new student who joins The Corporate Survivor.
I hear these frustrations often during our 1:1 career strategy call.
If you're struggling at work, then escaping to social media to feel better...
Then, you're likely mistaking blind positivity with empowering positivity.
Instead of helping, it's making you feel even worse.
So, here's a quick perspective that'll help you out:
Blind positivity:
Scrolling on social media looking for inspiring content.
Once you found it, you feel happy and high.
You tell yourself: I'm going to remind myself to be positive!
Tomorrow, when you get back to work, NOTHING has changed.
You don't know what to do and still feel down.
At the end of the day, you jump back on social media for a little dose of happiness.
Empowering positivity:
Scrolling on social media looking for educational content.
Once you found it, you feel curious and want to learn more.
You ask yourself: Is this person teaching me an expert or an entertainer?
Tomorrow, when you get back to work, you try applying the career tips.
Keyword is "try" because you're using free content, not a step-by-step course.
You saw some results and feel excited to try again.
Maybe, you decided to learn more in-depth and join a program.
Now, you see possibilities and results from taking the right actions.
Not hoping for another social media high (escapism mode).
With no real impact on your real career.
So Friend, which type of positivity do you go for?
With love, Mei Phing
