Hey Mp!
11 January 2016.
New York City, USA.
You remember the time you had to do public speaking for the first time.
That was my first time presenting at the Manhattan office.
It was when I was leading the compliance team at Standard Chartered.
I had to deliver training to 2000 staff members globally.
Scary was an understatement.
It was terrifying.
I'm a highly introverted person.
I prefer working hard in the background.
I didn't want to do it.
I asked my boss to look for someone else.
I told my stakeholders others can do it better than me.
But they believed in me.
Wanted me to do it.
They saw something in me that I clearly didn't,
Maybe the better question to ask is: What am I afraid of?
Looking stupid?
Looking dumb?
I decided to give it a try.
If I do it today, I will feel uncomfortable but I learn from it.
if I do it tomorrow, I will still feel uncomfortable because it's new to me.
If I do it 10 years later, I bet I will feel 10X worse and almost impossible.
90 days after...
It was March 31st, 2016.
I was delivering the full training at the London office with confidence.
It starts with self-belief and willingness to try.
Then, your communication skills to speak clearly.
Finally, charisma for speaking to a crowd.
It took me 90 days to feel confident in myself.
How about you?
So Mp, shall we give change a try together? :)
With love (and courage),
Mei Phing xx
